Real Bread Week

Nutritional Benefits of Bread - NRG Gym Health Advice

This week it’s the tenth anniversary of Real Bread Week. But there’s bread, and there’s bread. All sorts. For instance, if you want to be fit and healthy we can’t recommend white bread – it can do more harm than good by providing few nutrients but plenty of calories, as well as causing blood-sugar levels to rocket, only then to crash.

However, wholewheat bread is something we definitely urge you to eat. Here’s why:

  • It is full of B vitamins and protein, both especially beneficial for hair and skin.
  • It has energy-providing healthy carbs that digest more slowly and fill you up (so you’ll be less likely to consume more calories). Several studies have found these carbs can reduce the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, strokes, cardiovascular disease and colon cancer.
  • These carbs also increase the brain’s levels of feel-good serotonin. So you’ll feel happier (and not feel such a desire to grab for unhealthy snacks like cakes and sweets).
  • Look out for breads with various grains and seeds – these are packed with extra healthy goodness.

The fresher the better of course. So how about getting baking, which is a great way of relieving stress in itself.

And who can resist that delicious smell of freshly baked bread…?
