Have you managed to lose some of that weight you put on over the holiday period just yet…? Most of us do put on a few pounds. All too easily. Losing it again can be much harder.

In general terms, men with a waist circumference of 94cm or above and women with a waist circumference of 80cm or above are more likely to develop obesity health problems. A BMI of 25 to 29.9 means you’re overweight; 30 to 39.9 means you’re obese, and 40 or above means you’re severely obese.

This week is National Obesity Awareness Week to bring to the fore this problem. Being overweight limits lifestyle, but it can also be a killer. In fact, it’s estimated that being overweight contributes to at least one in every 13 deaths throughout Europe.

Being overweight can lead to:

  • gallstones
  • reduced fertility
  • liver disease
  • kidney disease
  • increased sweating
  • acid reflux
  • snoring
  • depression
  • low self-esteem
  • breathlessness
  • joint pain
  • back pain

Additionally, it can play a part in:

  • coronary heart disease
  • stroke
  • asthma
  • type 2 diabetes
  • some cancers including of the womb, bowel & breast
