Benefits of Running the London Marathon - NRG Gym Advice

This weekend sees the London Marathon take place, now one of the world’s major running events since it first started in 1981. It has raised more than £450 million for charity and currently holds the Guinness world record as the biggest annual fundraising event on the entire planet!

It also raises awareness of running as a fantastic way to keep fit – whether outdoors or on a treadmill at the gym.

So here are some great reasons to start legging it!

  • Running burns more calories than any other conventional exercise.
  • Regular running reduces risk of chronic illnesses, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke.
  • It can also boost your mood and be a form of meditation (try listening to relaxing music to help).
  • Running side by side with a friend will help you push yourself – and can be more fun too!

But make sure you have a decent pair of running shoes before you start. Plus, it’s vital to warm up for a few minutes, then start running slowly before upping your pace and distance over several run sessions.

Give yourself a few minutes to cool down after each run by walking, then doing a few stretches. If you need any advice, don’t hesitate to ask one of our experts at the gym (where the treadmills mean you can always run in the dry and warm!).

And remember, life’s a marathon not a sprint!
